Happy New Year from the Australia SMPTE team
On behalf of the Board and extended SMPTE team, we hope you are all
having a great break. The Melbourne Bash was well
attended, and we congratulate John, Simon and the Sections Meeting team
for making it happen.
If you have an idea for a Section Meeting in 2009, tell us. Don't
sit there and complain that nothing happens: send a note to info@smpte.org.au and spill your
brains.
SMPTE Australia Calls for Papers:
SMPTE09 planning well under way!
SMPTE Australia is seeking proposals for technical
papers and tutorials to be presented in Paper Programmes including new
‘Boot Camps’ and ‘Master Classes/Workshops’ at this year’s SMPTE09
Exhibition & Conference, July 21 – 24 2009, Sydney Convention &
Exhibition Centre, Darling Harbour. Papers selected will be
informational in nature and must address one or all of the eleven
technical topics drawing relevance to SMPTE09’s theme, ‘Empowering the
Next Generation’.
In previous years, the standard peer-reviewed Papers Programme has
attracted numerous leading-edge papers focussing on everything from
advanced developments and convergence technologies to trends and
requirements for educating the next generation.
With SMPTE’s initiative of Media Industry Technologists Certification
(MITC) now in place and the new addition of ‘Boot Camps’ and ‘Master
Classes/Workshops, SMPTE09 will have an even greater focus on
education. ‘Boot Camps’ will be intro-sessions that provide in-depth
backgrounding on specific topics for the younger technologist; while,
‘Master Classes/Workshops’ will be intensive sessions for mid-career
technologists, drilling deep into one subject. Both categories will be
set as 1-2 hour sessions, with additional time scheduled for ‘hot
button’ issues.
The technical topics for Session Ideas and Conference Papers are:
- Education: next generation, transition from old to new
- 3D-stereoscopy: 3D imaging, processing, distribution and display
- 4K-acquisition: shooting in 4K resolution, storage, archiving,
solutions
- Television: analogue switch off – are we there yet, how long will it
take and what is the US/UK experience?
- Film and its associated processes: death of film, new film stocks,
digital intermediaries
- Post production: ‘tapeless workflow’
- Mobile/IPTV: production, Next G, full screen
- Outside broadcasts: high definition and its impact on major events
- Radio: the effect of DAB, future developments, impact of the internet
- Compression: DVB-T2 in Australia, what will provoke the replacement
of MPEG-2 with MPEG-4?
- Archiving: going digital, latest developments.
Interested parties are invited to submit a 200-word synopsis to papers@smpte.com.au. In doing
so, papers should be marked indicating whether they are aimed at ‘Boot
Camp’, “Master Class’ or tabled for peer review. Ideas for workshops,
sessions or panels as well as papers are welcome.

It's All About Knowledge - Seminars, Workshops,
Roadshows!
The Australia Section of SMPTE is taking a proactive
position on any events which contribute to education of members and
participants in the industry at large.
If you're running a seminar, workshop, or roadshow which is
technology-focused, and it's open to everyone who applies, let us know:
we will help you publicise it by mentioning it on this site. Drop a
line to seminars@smpte.org.au
and let's talk.

In 2008 the MITC team launched the process with the
foundation certification round. 28 of your fellow
technologists now have certificates formally recognizing that they can
"Show What You Know". The MITC Board is working on the plan
for 2009, and there is plenty of detailed information available on the
web (www.mitc.tv) if
you've missed the story so far.
Whether you’re in Radio, Television, Film,
Transmission, New Media, Broadcast Operations, or Outside Broadcast;
whether you’re an employee or a freelancer; whether you’re a newbie or
a technology executive, you have a part to play in helping the Media
Industry in Australia stay the clever industry that we’ve always been.
MITC.
